Zumba is a mix of Latin American rhythms – salsa, merengue, flamenco, or bachata – and aerobic exercise that has become a popular weight-loss routine in recent years because of the mandatory home isolation in which we live today. It is a fitness discipline developed by Colombian Alberto “Beto”, whose name comes from the word rumba, as Colombians colloquially call parties.

This blend of music and energetic movements was born when its creator was a teacher at a gym in Cali, Colombia, in the late 1990s. One day he forgot the music for class, so he didn’t hesitate for a moment, went to his car, and grabbed some CDs he had with him, mostly of Latin American music.

The class was so successful that he decided to turn it into the sport he practices today, and it quickly became an international success and fame when “Beto” moved to Miami in 2001.

“Beto” describes it as a fusion of different disciplines such as ballet, reggaeton, salsa, or bachata. Those who practice it say that the key to why Zumba is the star of weight-loss exercises lies in the mix of fast and slow rhythms combined with a series of exercises that not only allow us to lose those extra pounds.

They are so difficult to get rid of but also to tone our muscles and overcome the relaxation of the body, especially in areas that are not worked in other activities, such as oblique muscles, twists, or lateral areas of the body. Types of Zumba

Zumba Gold and Zumba Gold Toning

This variant of Zumba is designed specifically for older people and includes exercises and routines adapted to their mobility and physical strength. The movements improve balance, coordination, and range of motion and strengthen muscles and the cardiovascular system. In the toning variant, the exercises are supplemented with dumbbells, which increases the degree of difficulty.

Zumba steps

Everything that constitutes Zumba, but with an extra element: aerobic stepping. Perform the choreography with small steps from top to bottom. This increases the intensity, burns many calories, and tones the legs and abs even more.

Seated Zumba
