What is body balance

Body Balance is an exercise program that combines yoga, stretching, Pilates, and Tai Chi to train, relax, and balance the body and mind gently but effectively. What are you waiting for?

What is body balance?

Developed in 1998 by Australian company Les Milles, this “gentle gymnastics” works the whole body by combining strength training, stretching, balance, posture correction, and relaxation in one session. Body Balance combines the best Eastern and Western disciplines in one session to provide a complete physical and mental workout.

Body Balance is an alternative for those who want a gentle workout, those seeking an effective activity for the mind and body, or those curious about Eastern disciplines. It also complements other sports and physical activities, strengthening muscles and correcting posture.

Bodybalance classes are a special experience for participants because they are visually stunning, and the movements are choreographed to the rhythm of music, chosen specifically for each piece or part of the session.

It is not necessary to have practiced yoga or tai chi to participate in a body balance class; anyone can participate, including the elderly and pregnant women. Exercises are designed to be safe and effective, and simple and advanced options are always available. By performing the same choreography for three months, participants can improve their technique and progress in difficulty.

How does a body balance class work?

Each body balance class is then taught quarterly by instructors worldwide. In this way, the student always finds an effective class that does not depend on the teacher’s imagination or skills. In addition, body balance teachers must be pre-certified to teach this training program.

Remember that the classes not only keep the body fit but also help to relax through the use of candles, incense, essences, soft lighting, etc., used by the teachers.

Each class consists of ten sections that work on each part of the body:

  • Taichi warm-up exercises: the class begins with a gentle warm-up exercise that combines breathing exercises and movements of this Eastern discipline.
  • Sun Salutation: this is another intense warm-up for joints and muscles and is followed by a series of stretches and yoga postures.
  • Leg work: this yoga-based series tones and stretches the legs with static postures and dynamic exercises: triangle pose, warrior pose, intensive pose, etc.
  • Balance: this piece combines yoga postures and dance to work on balance, body control, and posture correction.
  • Hip Fly: yoga postures and movements to stretch and challenge the hips, groin, and shoulders.
  • Pilates Abdominals: in this piece, you work on the abdominal muscles by combining breathing and Pilates exercises.
  • Back Workout: This series strengthens and trains the back, hamstrings, and glutes through yoga, Pilates, and Feldenkrais.
  • Twists: elongated yoga and Tai Chi movements that improve spine mobility and stimulate internal organs.
  • Hamstring work: yoga postures and other techniques to stretch back and back leg muscles shortened by daily activity.
  • Relaxation and meditation: with very soft music and through breathing and meditation, the instructor helps participants relax the body and mind—one of the most anticipated moments of the course.

Tips for practicing body balance

The following are some tips to follow if you want to start practicing Body Balance:

  • You can practice Body Balance in sports clubs affiliated with Les Milles International’s BTS (Best Training System) in Spain or abroad. You can find the center nearest to you on AEFA ( aefabts.com ).
  • For a Body Balance class, comfortable, lightweight clothes are used, with which you can move and sweat. To increase sensation and comfort, remove your shoes. In winter, remember to bring socks and a sweatshirt so you don’t get cold while relaxing.
  • If you are doing a light workout, go to class with a water bottle. Remember to drink before and after your workout to avoid cramping or stretching.
  • If you are a beginner, start with the simple options the instructor will show you. You have three months to improve your fitness, perfect your technique and learn advanced exercises.
  • Body Balance is a complete fitness system that you can practice every day. However, since it is usually practiced in addition to other physical activities, two or three sessions per week are ideal.
  • The ten-session pieces are choreographed to music that always uses current or iconic themes you will enjoy hearing during the workout.
  • One of the great advantages of Body Balance is that if you change gyms, cities, or even countries, you can continue to work out as efficiently as you did. Just find a club affiliated with the BTS system (there are many worldwide!).
